A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
