The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
