The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
